REEFVTS - Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait Vessel Traffic Service

Visual Obsession was contracted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) to develop an informational video on the REEFVTS centre based in Townsville. REEFVTS monitors ship traffic in the Great Barrier Reef, providing safety and traffic information to shipmasters in the area to avoid accidents and groundings in the sensitive Great Barrier Reef. The video covers the centre's history, important improvements and milestones, and the various procedures and systems the operators use to help make shipping safer in the Torres Strait and Great Barrier Reef. The Visual Obsession team travelled to Townsville to interview the staff at the REEFVTS centre, and film them demonstrating various procedures in real life situations. A Visual Obsession team member went to Mackay and flew out to the bulk carrier Suigo at the outer Great Barrier Reef in a helicopter (almost 200km off-shore). We documented the journey of the crew interaction with the REEFVTS centre and the procedures on board as the vessel travelled through the reef toward Hay Point. Visual Obsession worked closely with AMSA and MSQ (Maritime Safety Queensland) to ensure that the video clearly explained all the functions of the REEFVTS centre as well as its interactions with ships and reef pilots. The finished video premiered at the NATship 2012 Conference in Melbourne. The client was very happy with the finished product, noting the AMSA CEO was most impressed. After the premiere, the secretary general of the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) requested the video to be shown at their next council meeting and their headquarters in London.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)

AMSA contracted Visual Obsession to film and document two major parts of their services. In an incredible one day shoot, Professional Camera Operator Corey Austin travelled from Cairns to Mackay to film various procedures at the Mackay REEFVTS centre, which monitors ships entering Australian waters. This included radio and navigational operations as well as a helicopter flight to one of the many cargo ships just outside the wharf. As part of AMSA's National Emergency Plan, Visual Obsession documented a re-enactment of a dangerous Hydrochloric Acid Spill at Brisbane Wharf. The AMSA emergency crew performed the task with unsurpassed integrity and passion, even after extinguishing a major industrial fire and responding to a severe car crash earlier in the same day.

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA)

After extensive preparation with equipment, travel, accommodation, traditional permission, talent and props, vehicles and vessels. Visual Obsession collaborated with Maritime Safety Queensland to produce four positive, upbeat and informative television commercials to enhance community awareness about boating safety "Stop, Think & Survive" around the Torres Straits. Using High Definition state of the art equipment Visual Obsession's cameraman 'Corey Austin' filmed various shots within the Torres Strait about safety out on the water and steps you need take if you break down.
The television commercials were then edited by Visual Obsession. Which involved logging and editing all footage, Design 3 dimensional "Stop, Think & Survive" logo, Source music, narration in kreole and also translated in English using subtitles to accommodate the Torres Strait community. After our client approved the television commercials they were aired on Imparja. Maritime Safety Queensland were pleased with the successful outcome of the Television series of four commercials.

Mulgrave Land Care

The objective of this DVD was to showcase new environmentally friendly technologies that Land Care and the sugar cane farmers have invented and adapted to assist in the protection of the Great Barrier Reef and the world heritage listed rainforests. The footage was shot using a broadcast DVCPRO50 widescreen digital camera and edited on a Liquid Silver edit suite and authored using Adobe Encore.

Catchment to the Sea - The Mighty Burdekin River

The Burdekin Development Council tendered for a documentary on the Burdekin River and Dam, to be shown in the areas’ new Power Station Museum. Visual Obsession was awarded the contract.

Visual Obsession filming crew travelled to the Burdekin to shoot the documentary footage, including some amazing lightning storms.

After scripting and editing, the completed documentary was unveiled on Queensland Day where it can now be seen on a large plasma screen by visitors to the Museum.

Queensland Transport – Ready for the Road Resource booklet for indigenous audiences

Queensland Transport - Ready for the Road

The printed booklet features characters from the software program with written versions of the interactive tests and real photos of driving situations taken in regional communities. Ready for the Road is being rolled out across Queensland Transport centres in Cairns, Cape York and Far North Queensland.

Hutchinson Builders
