Search Engine Optimisation

The wonderful world of the web; it’s an information directory. You can request just about anything and the internet will do its best to meet your demands. And this is only what it provides the consumer. In terms of the company, the internet has become the latest marketing tool. A marketing genre even.

Search engines have become the main channel for people to find websites, which makes SEO the perfect tool.

Search engines allow companies to appear like advertisements at the exact time the consumer needs them. When it comes to finding your target consumer, marketing can’t get much better than this. Your target consumer will actually come looking for you and thanks to search engine optimisation, you will be waiting with open arms.

But how exactly does search engine optimisation (SEO) work? Well it’s all about your company’s website.

Website Content

Design and high quality images are usually thought of as the most important elements of any website. And this is true, they are important. They welcome the potential customer to the site and keep them interested. A good design will allow them to navigate throughout the site with ease, picking up information as they go.

However, content is important also. It’s the element that companies often under-estimate when creating or maintaining a website. Some websites provide the basic information in a basic way. This mistake unfortunately affects the success of the website. Not only is badly written content a wasted opportunity when it comes to retaining site visitors but it fails to take advantage of SEO.

Search Engines

The most common search engines today are Google, Yahoo and Bing. These search engines allow people to search for websites by entering keywords that relate to the type of website they are hoping to find. Search engines have become the main channel for people to find websites, which makes SEO the perfect tool.

SEO is used to improve the ranking of your websites in search engine results. These results are largely dependent on your website’s content and how closely it matches the search words used.

You need to identify the keywords associated to your website/company and write the content for your website with these words in mind.

Keywords

When we speak about keywords we are referring to the words people might use to search for your website. You need to identify the keywords associated to your website/company and write the content for your website with these words in mind.

The search engine examines individual web pages, not websites as a whole, for these keywords. The website should contain some overall keywords that appear on each page of the site and also some keywords specific to the subject of each individual page.

The content has to include these keywords but the writer should ensure that the content is still high quality. The content should provide the reader with the information they need in a professional manner and the keywords should simply blend into the background.

Links

Writing content correctly is only one way to improve your search engine rankings. Including quality links in your website is another valuable technique. Links should be relevant to your website as their keywords count as yours once you are linked. However most links are good for SEO even if they’re not relevant, as long as they are trusted links. Government sites are an example of websites that are highly trusted by search engines, immediately improving your optimisation. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are also useful links to include on your website. However these are worth less than websites in terms of optimisation.

Traffic

Traffic is another way to achieve optimisation. When we spoke about keywords we emphasized the fact that keywords should be relevant to the website/company itself. However if search words are used to find your website that aren’t all that relevant, they can still in fact be helpful. Search engines reward traffic by improving rankings. Even if your viewer is not interested in your site, their quick visit has improved traffic and in turn optimisation.

What Not to Do

Link farms are an example of a linking technique not to use. Link farms are sites set up with the sole purpose of linking to other websites to achieve optimisation. Search engines frown upon them. They are used to gain popularity in rankings but this will be short lived, as search engines like Google will not tolerate this.

Millions of people around the world use the internet everyday. With search engines being their primary way of finding what they need, it’s the perfect time to understand the secrets behind the construction and maintenance of websites. SEO is this secret. It allows you to impress search engines like Google and Yahoo. It allows you to rise above your competitors in search engine results. This all means that you are there, ready and waiting, at the top of the search engine list, when your potential customer comes looking for you.
